Exact Fitting
These helpful video guides show you how to measure for recess fitting (inside the window recess) and exact fitting (mounted on the wall above the recess).
For a detailed written guide and tips for trickier windows – like bay windows or recesses with partial tiling.
Measure Each Window Section Individually
1. Recess or Inside-Fit Blinds
If you want your blind to sit inside the window recess, follow this method. This also applies to our Clic Fit Blinds and No Drill Blinds.
- Measure the full width and height of the recess (basically, the size of the window opening).
- Take three measurements for both the width and the height, then use the smallest measurements.
- We’ll make the necessary adjustments to ensure a perfect fit.
Check your recess is deep enough for the blind and watch out for obstructions like handles, locks, or tiles – Especially for Vertical blinds, Venetian blinds, and Double Roller Blinds and Day & Night blinds.
- Measure the recess depth to ens
Check for obstructions such as window handles, tiles, or shutters.
| Blind Type | Depth Required |
| 25mm Aluminium | 30mm |
| 35mm Wood/Faux Wood | 65mm |
| 50mm Wood/Faux Wood | 70mm |
| 63mm Wood/Faux Wood | 80mm |
| Roman Blind | 50mm |
| Vertical Blind | 75mm |
| Roller Blind Top-Fix | 50mm |
| Roller Blind Face-Fix | 70mm |
| Cassette Roller Blind | 85mm |
| Double Roller Blind Top-Fix | 120mm |
| Double Roller Blind Face-Fix | 105mm |
| Day & Night Blinds | 85mm |
| Pleated Blinds (With Cords) | 45mm |

2. Recesses with Tiles (Kitchens & Bathrooms)
If your recess has tiles part-way up (common in kitchens and bathrooms), the space between them is usually the narrowest point.
- Measure between the tiles to ensure your blind will fit.
- You’ll need to top-fix or face-fix your brackets in this case.
- Note: Recesses like this are not suitable for No Drill Blinds.
Top Tip for Roller Blinds
- Measure at the top of the recess and between the tiles, then compare the two measurements.
- If the difference is less than 25mm, use the measurement at the top.
- If the difference is more than 25mm, use the measurement between the tiles.
3. Roller Blinds & No Drill Blinds
These blinds need to fit snugly at the top of the recess, so measuring is slightly different:
- Measure the width at the top of the recess only.
- Do not make any deductions—we’ll do that for you.
- Use a metal tape measure—cloth tapes can stretch and provide inaccurate measurements
Following this tip helps your blind fit perfectly every time!
4. Outside-Fit / Exact-Fit Blinds
If you want the blind to sit outside the recess and overlap on all sides:
- Measure the size of the recess, then add extra to ensure adequate coverage.
- To reduce light leakage, we recommend an overlap of:
- Top: at least 70mm
- Sides: at least 50mm each side
- The bottom overlap is personal choice, but watch for obstacles like radiators.
- Use a metal tape measure—cloth tapes can stretch and provide inaccurate measurements
Tip:Ensure the area is clear from obstructions
Top Tips for All Blinds
- Replacing an existing blind? Simply measure the blind including its fittings and order as exact fit.
Top Tips for Roller Blinds
- The overall width of a roller blind, including brackets, is usually 35mm wider than the fabric.
- Decide whether you want to measure for the full bracket-to-bracket width or just the fabric coverage.
5. Outside-Fit / Full-Coverage Reminder
Outside-fit blinds are ideal for:
- Covering the window fully, even if the recess is shallow
- Minimising light leakage
- Achieving a clean, finished look
Always double-check the measurement at multiple points to account for any uneven surfaces or obstructions.
6. General Measuring Tips for All Blinds
- General Measuring Tips for All Blinds
- Take three measurements at different points and use the smallest number.
- Check for obstructions such as handles, locks, tiles, or radiators.
- Metal tape measures are best – cloth tapes can stretch and provide inaccurate measurements
- Double-check recess depth, especially in older windows.
- For motorised blinds, ensure enough space for the mechanism at the top.
- For child-safe blinds, verify that cordless or tensioned systems fit safely.
- Exact Fitting
If you want your blind to sit outside the window recess and overlap on all sides:
- Measure the size of the recess and then add extra so the blind fully covers the window.
- To reduce light leakage, we recommend an overlap of:
- Top: at least 70mm
- Sides: at least 50mm each
- The bottom overlap is up to you—just check for obstacles like radiators.
- Always use a metal tape measure—cloth tapes can stretch and provide inaccurate measurements
Top Tips
- For all blinds: Replacing an existing blind? Measure the whole blind including its fittings and specify exact fit. We’ll make one the same size.
- For roller blinds: The overall width (bracket to bracket) is usually about 35mm wider than the fabric. You can choose whether to measure for the full width or just the fabric coverage.
Bay Windows – Detailed Measuring Guide
Measuring bay windows can seem tricky, but following this step-by-step guide will help you get accurate measurements every time.
Important: No Drill Blinds cannot be used in bay windows. Clic Fit Blinds can only be used on flat glass panels
Step 1: Understand Your Bay Window Type
Angled Bay
- Usually has windows set at angles to each other (e.g., 135°).
- Each window section may need its own blind, or a continuous blind with corner connectors.
Square Bay
- Windows meet at 90° angles, forming a rectangular bay.
- Can be fitted with either individual blinds per section or a continuous blind across the bay.
Step 2: Gather Tools
- Metal tape measure (avoid cloth tapes—these stretch).
- Pen and paper to record each measurement.
- Step ladder if your windows are high.
- Spirit level (optional) to check for uneven sills.
Step 4: Measuring Each Blind Type
Vertical Blinds
- Measure the overall width of the bay (outer edge to outer edge).
- Measure drop from top of window to floor or sill – note the shortest drop.
- Note angles between windows for corner connectors.
- Measure at multiple points to avoid uneven sills affecting operation.
Roller Blinds
- Width: measure at top of recess.
- Drop: top to sill.
- For angled bays, measure the angle between each window.
- Exact fitting: include any overlap if required.
Double Roller Blinds
- Same as roller blinds.
- Specify which fabric goes in front/back if using two different fabrics.
25mm Aluminium Blinds
- Measure width inside recess, three points, smallest measurement.
- Measure drop top of recess to sill.
- Check recess depth is enough for mounting brackets.
Wooden Blinds
- Measure width inside the recess, three points, use the smallest.
- Measure drop top to sill, three points, use the shortest.
- Check recess depth (25mm, 35-38mm, 50mm, 63-65mm blinds need different depths).
Note any obstructions (handles, tiles).
Day&Night/Vision Blinds
- Width: measure at top of recess.
- Drop: top of recess to sill – Note the shortest measurement.
- Include angles if used in an angled bay.
Roman Blinds
- Measure width inside recess, three points, smallest measurement.
- Measure drop from the top of recess to sill.
- Decide if you want recess fit (inside) or exact fit (include any overlap if required).
- Check depth for mounting brackets.
Pleated Blinds
- Width: inside recess, smallest of three measurements.
- Drop: top of recess to sill.
- Note operation type: corded, Motorised.
- Check for tiles or other obstructions.
Step 5: Special Considerations
A. Recesses with Tiles (Kitchens & Bathrooms)
- Measure between tiles, as this is usually the narrowest point.
- Top-fix or face-fix brackets may be required.
- Roller blinds: Compare top of recess vs between tiles:
- Difference <25mm (Less than) → use top measurement
- Difference >25mm (More than) → use measurement between tiles
B. Overlaps / Exact Fitting
- Add 50mm to the sides and 70mm to the top to reduce light gaps.
- Bottom overlap is optional—check for radiators, vents, or handles.
- For roller blinds, the overall bracket-to-bracket width is usually 35mm wider than the fabric. Decide whether you want the full width or just fabric coverage.
C. Existing Blinds Replacement
- Measure existing blind including brackets.
- Specify exact fit for the new blind.
Step 6: Double-Check Everything
- Measure three times at each point.
- Use a metal tape measure.
- Record all measurements carefully.
- Check for obstructions and angles.
- Confirm recess depth is sufficient.
Following these steps carefully will help avoid mistakes and ensure your bay window blinds fit perfectly the first time.
